I once watched someone move across the country for a new cement job.
Several hours into the drive, they became so overwhelmed by the decision that they turned around.
They went home.
And they quit before they ever started.
I’ve seen enough situations like that over the years to know something:
Changing jobs is a much bigger decision than clicking “Apply” makes it seem.
Especially in heavy industry.
You may be considering moving your family.
Selling a house.
Leaving people you’ve worked with for years.
Taking a chance on a plant, a boss, and a company you don’t really know yet.
And long before you make any of those decisions, there’s another uncomfortable step.
You have to put yourself out there.
You send in your resume.
Your name enters a system.
You don’t necessarily know who sees it.
You may know people at the company.
Someone there may know your boss.
And after all of that, you may never even hear back.
That’s a lot to put on the line just to see if a job is worth talking about.
I think there should be a step before that.
Have the conversation first.
Find out what the job is.
Ask questions.
Decide whether it’s worth pursuing.
You don’t have to be actively looking.
You don’t have to send out your resume.
Then, if it feels right, make the bigger decision.
That way, you can make a more informed decision and have someone to talk to every step of the way.
